Year 7 Book Club

Year 7 Book Club had its latest meeting in the library today, where we discussed ‘We Are All Made of Molecules’ by Susin Nielsen. This was the most popular title yet, with an overall score of 8.7. We all enjoyed the way the story was told from the point of view of two very different narrators (Ashley and Stewart), and the way that some difficult themes were handled with humour.

Next on the list is ‘The Nest’ by Kenneth Oppel – it looks a lot darker that the previous title so it will be interesting to see what the feedback is! Other books we have read this year are ‘Terror Kid’ by Benjamin Zephaniah,’ Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll, ‘Dreaming the Bear’ by Mimi Thebo and ‘Jessica’s Ghost’ by Andrew Norriss.

LGBT+ History Month

The recently formed WGHS LGBT+ Society has been meeting  in the library each Friday lunchtime. The formation of the society has handily coincided with LGBT+ History month, so the students have been working on a display which we have put up in the library to signpost our LGBT+ fiction collection. Come and have a browse!

More information on LGBT+ History month is available here: http://lgbthistorymonth.org.uk/ or on twitter @LGBTHM.

December Updates

 emag-1

The new issue of eMag is available in the library. There are some great articles on The Great Gatsby , Hamlet and Brighton Rock as well as some advice for preparing to English at University. An online version is also available, as well as the archive of all previous issues. Just click here and login with the username WGHS and password L1brary.

We have some more graphic novels for you to borrow. We will be shadowing the Excelsior Award in the new year, so get some practice in before the shortlist is announced! The award looks at 8 (as yet unannounced) graphic novels from the previous year and a group of students will be invited to read them all and decide which one is the overall winner. If you think you might be interested in taking part, email me at jlees@wghs.org.uk.

graphic-novels-1

Christmas has landed in the library – the ‘interesting’ tree has been put up, along with a display of festive-related books (The Poems of Robert Frost may be taking the link a bit too far, but hey!). Pop in and borrow some books to read over the holidays!
